A step-by-step guide to help you apply for your VAT number

Determine if you are VAT liable
Not all businesses are required to charge VAT. If you plan to conduct economic activities, such as providing goods or services, and you expect to reach a certain turnover, you are likely VAT liable. Check the Belgian tax authority's website (FOD Financiën) for more information on who is VAT liable.
Register your business
Before you can apply for a VAT number, you need to register your business with the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises (KBO). This can be done online via the business counter of your choice. You will receive an enterprise number that you need for VAT registration.
Apply for the VAT number
Once your business is registered with the KBO, you can apply for a VAT number at the VAT control office that is responsible for your region. This can be done by filling out the 'Application for VAT Identification' form (form 604A). The form can be downloaded from the FOD Financiën website.
Documents and requirements
When submitting your application, you will need to provide several documents and information, including your identification, enterprise number, a description of your activities, and possibly proof of professional qualifications if relevant to your sector.
Processing time and confirmation
After submitting your application, the VAT control office will process your application. This may take some time, but you will eventually receive a written confirmation with your assigned VAT number.
Start invoicing
Once you receive your VAT number, you are authorized to charge VAT on your invoices to customers. Remember to correctly state the VAT on your invoices and to submit regular VAT returns to the tax authorities.
